Overview
Imagine setting off from Cape Town just after sunrise, the city’s silhouette fading in your rearview mirror as you journey east. The road soon winds through rugged mountains, their slopes cloaked in fynbos and wildflowers, before opening up to the vast, semi-arid plains of the Little Karoo. Here lies Oudtshoorn, a town famed for its ostrich farms and Victorian charm, nestled beneath the dramatic Swartberg Mountains. On your first day, you wander through the cool shadows of the Cango Caves, marvelling at limestone formations sculpted over millions of years-cathedrals of stone with names like Botha’s Hall and the Devil’s Chimney.
Day two dawns with a change of scenery. The route snakes over mountain passes, descending into the lush, emerald world of the Garden Route proper. Forests thicken, the air grows moist, and soon you arrive in Knysna. This coastal gem is framed by the iconic Knysna Heads-towering sandstone cliffs that guard the entrance to a tranquil lagoon. You stroll along the waterfront, perhaps sampling the town’s famous oysters or taking a boat ride across the lagoon, soaking up views that have captivated travellers for generations.
On day three, the adventure continues to Plettenberg Bay, where long golden beaches stretch out beneath a wide African sky. Robberg Nature Reserve beckons with its windswept cliffs and panoramic ocean views, while dolphins play in the surf below. The town itself is lively, with boutique shops and cafés, but the real magic lies in its natural beauty. Later, you venture into the ancient, misty Tsitsikamma Forest, crossing the famous Storms River suspension bridge and breathing in the scent of moss and sea spray. Here, the Tsitsikamma National Park offers a playground of hiking trails, canopy tours, and the raw drama of waves crashing against rocky shores.
On your final day, you retrace your route along the Garden Route, each turn revealing new vistas of forest, mountain, and sea. Eventually, the road veers inland, leading you back toward Cape Town, your mind filled with memories of caves and coastlines, forests and beaches, and the ever-changing beauty of South Africa’s southern shore.
